Sundevils Unable to Secure Three-Peat, Take 4th |
They came within a penalty of securing a place in the Championship Game, but it wasn't to be for the Sundevils in 2009.
After defeating ACT 26-0 in their opening fixture, the Sundevils went down 14-8 to Victoria, with a 90 yard TD pass to WR Scott Lehmann called back for a behind the play foul. The score would have given the team victory and a meeting with NSW for the title, but the loss relegated QLD to the consolation final against WA. Western Australia were hungry for the upset and despite a level scoreline at halftime, the Sundevils were unable to sustain their momentum as WA took the result 26-8.
Sundevils Safety Paget Hoad was awarded team MVP at the Tournament Dinner on Friday night.
Congratulations and commiserations to the Sundevils players, coaches and management on their efforts during the tournament. We are sure that the tournament will be a boost to the state domestic competition as the building process recommences for the Junior Nationals in 2011.
Many thanks to the Gold Coast Stingrays for their efforts as Tournament Host for the week.

Sundevils Juniors Sweat It Out To Start Campaign |
In stifling humidity, the 2009 Queensland Sundevils Junior State Team began their National Championships preparations with their first training session.
Minus the handful of Australian Representatives who were in Canberra for the World Cup Qualifying game against NZ, the coaching staff and players got to work on the road to the title defense.
Head Coach Steve Box commended the efforts of the players and staff. "It was a really good start to our program. It was hot and draining, but the players all worked hard to give their all as they came together for the first time".
The Sundevils continue their training sessions fortnightly.

Coaching Staff Set For Title Defense |
Winning a third consecutive National Championship is a big challenge. With every state gunning for QLD, Head Coach Steve Box
knew it was going to take an extra effort to keep the title in Queensland hands. To help take the team where it needed to go, Box
has assembled a staff mixing familiarity and championship experience, along with an injection of new coaching blood.
Coaches Paul Knight and Andy Miller return for their third campaign with the Sundevils, keen to ensure their run of success continues. The
coaching staff also welcomes onboard two former Sundevils Junior players - Thompson Sunerton and Shaun Hunter, the pair part of the 2004
campaign and former Australian Under Age representatives. Completing the coaching staff is Offensive Line coach Dan Franklin and
Defensive Backs coach and Assistant Team Manager Liam Flannery. 'Captain' Ron Knight is again on board as team manager, working hard
to rehab after recent knee surgery ready for the state challenge ahead.
With a new group of players to work with, the coaches are convinced that this group can replicate the achievements of the past two
Sundevils teams. "There is no doubt we have plenty of talent here in Queensland. Our task now is to bring them together for
the common goal of keeping the Nationals Crown here".
Training for the 2009 Junior Nationals commences in late January, with the tournament to be held from 16-23 May on the Gold Coast.
