Sunbowl XXI, 12th November 2005
Sunbowl XXI was held at Usher Park, Rose St, Daisy Hill.
The day kicked off with the Challenge Cup, where the North Queensland Outlaws overcame
the tyranny of distance to put up stiff opposition for the South Queensland Stampede,
and the 22-0 score-line not indicative of how well they moved the ball. Rookie RB
Pether for the Outlaws impressed so much he has made the Queensland Senior Team
roster, well done David.
For the Junior Sunbowl, the Bayside Ravens faced what many pundits believed to be
their first real threat of dethroning in the last three years. The young Stingrays
outfit, full of running did in fact usurp the two time premier Ravens 22 - 6. With
both camps full of returning juniors other teams will have to work hard to prevent a
string of Ravens-Stingrays junior bowl match ups.
The game we had to have as some had called it. Sunbowl 21 and a first time champion
either result. The first in recent memory to feature neither Stingrays and Cougars
and what a game it was! Neither team left anything behind and the opening 10 minutes
was brutal as both teams with huge rosters, looked to sort each other out. Heading
into the two minute warning, the Wildcats had a 7-6 lead, only to be defied by a TD
catch in the end-zone by Rhinos WR O'Sullivan. The conversion was made for the final
score Rhinos 13 - Wildcats 7.
